Reunited

What was it about this fall’s Homecoming that made it seem so very special?

Perhaps it was the fact that we had a primarily virtual Homecoming in 2020 due to the pandemic, and it really did feel good to be back together. Just ask participants in the Heritage Circle or Black & Gold Banquet.

Maybe it was the perfect fall weather our Father provided, with highs in the 70s and 80s.

Perhaps it was the huge tailgate complete with reunions, entertainment and 10 food trucks before the dominant 64-7 Homecoming victory over Arkansas-Monticello.

It could have been that warm feeling you got while watching the cast and crew put on magical performances of “Elf the Musical.”

Perhaps it was reunion choruses singing together and honoring their recently retired director, Dr. Cliff Ganus III.

For many, it was witnessing the University honor the first seven African American pioneers to attend Harding and naming the Administration Auditorium after our first two graduates, Bro. Elijah Anthony and Dr. Howard Wright, in a moving ceremony that brought tears, laughter and reflection.

With more than 100 activities to choose from, there was something for everyone, but for me, Homecoming 2021 was even more special because my two children and their spouses — all graduates — came home and celebrated with us.

Reuniting never felt so good.
