Both Bruce McLarty and I graduated from Harding in the class of 1978, but it only took him three years to accomplish what took me four. Being a year ahead of him beginning college, I helped vote him in as a King’s Men social club member his freshman year — not that he needed my vote to get in.
After graduation, I lost track of him until we both returned to Searcy in 1991. He was the new minister at College Church of Christ, and I had become publications director at Harding. I kept the same position as he moved across the street to Harding and became vice president for spiritual life in 2005 and in 2013, president of the University. I was honored to design pieces for his inauguration.
Our office always enjoyed when he came down our hall, asking about our work and our lives with that characteristic smile and caring voice. We miss his physical presence on campus but know he will continue to bless others just as he blessed all of us.
Enjoy, and let us know what you think.
