Leaving a legacy

My Homer-Center High School yearbook staff was surprised when they found out the theme of the 1974 Wildcat Tale could be found in the Bible. “A time for …” was based on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Verse two tells us there is “a time to be born and a time to die.”

While we all hoped our beloved third president, chancellor emeritus and the greatest Bison fan ever would live to be at least 100, on Sept. 9 Dr. Clifton L. Ganus, Jr. went to his eternal home at the age of 97. What an honor and privilege it is for our staff to share his life, work and passing with you through this magazine. He would not want the recognition, but that is precisely why he is so worthy.

We highlight other notable deaths in the University family this issue including former provost Dr. Dean Priest and Dr. Tony Finley who served as dean of the College of Education. Our University Communications and Marketing office was touched this summer by the unexpected passing of our secretary and friend, Kelly Holaday Brackett.

Time marches swiftly on, but we continue to see and feel the contributions of these Harding giants and other members of the Harding family, as is noted in a feature on our role in the moon landing 50 years ago and in the lives of this year's honored alumni.

As always, let us know what you think.
